Key Competencies for Lifelong Learning in Youth Work (Positions FulFilled)

1st-5th of April 2019

Brussels, Belgium

Training Course

Project Summary

Key Competencies for Lifelong Learning, a topic that is very relevant for any continuous professional and personal development, has been brought more to the foreground on the European level since the turn of the century, for example with the European Commission’s Recommendation 2006/962/EC on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning as well as the new Council Recommendation released on 17 Jan 2018. (We are using the most up-to-date recommendation and the related definitions of the eight Key Competencies as the basis for our project.) Key competencies are also at the core of the YouthPass reflection and certification tool. The topic has been of interest to youth workers and other stakeholders we have been consulting over the past months. In our regular general assemblies where we gather representatives of our network members and various stakeholders, we always give space to discussions on what topics people find of particular importance to develop through extra activities. Key competencies for lifelong learning have been some of the topics mentioned frequently.

Youth workers across Europe feel the need to deepen their understanding of the competencies and how they can help foster and develop them in the young people as well as other target groups they might be working with. Many in the
youth work field are becoming increasingly aware of the potential of their work for complementing formal education, with the emphasis on nurturing transversal skills for life, not always sufficiently covered in national systems. This is particularly relevant for work with disengaged, hard-to-reach young people and those not in education, employment or training.
